Suite for Animation

What is a Suite?
A suite in music is an instrumental composition made up of a series of distinct movements, often based on dances. Each movement has its own character and rhythm, but they are all connected by a common theme or key. Suites were popular during the Baroque period and often included dances like the allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. Bach and Handel are known for composing famous suites.

The Suite for Animation, Op.5:
Pedro’s Suite for Animation draws inspiration from this approach, utilizing a caricatured, animation-like style as the unifying element across its movements. Rather than following specific storylines, the suite subtly hints at them, creating a playful and imaginative atmosphere. The movements aim to evoke emotions ranging from humour to suspense, but always with a cartoonish, exaggerated twist. Each movement centres around the concept of a character or a situation, bringing them to life in a whimsical and animated manner.

These pieces are also a technical exploration of creating concise musical narratives and developing themes over a continuous motif. The first three movements - in particular - are crafted by layering melodies over a repeating pattern, generating a sense of endless movement and excitement throughout the composition. When paired with the playful yet emotionally rich character of the music, this approach results in a light-hearted and captivating listening experience.
